It’s been several years since we’ve seen any major changes to the Meijer Coupon Acceptance Policy. As of April 17, 2018, a new corporate coupon policy was posted on the Meijer.com website. The last change posted was 6 years ago, on April 17, 2012. You can view the previous Meijer coupon policy here.
Please remember that if you choose to shop at Meijer with coupons, you will need to follow their rules. You may want to educate yourselves on these new changes – here are some that I spotted:
Changes to the MEIJER Coupon Acceptance Policy
- Customers may only use two identical coupons with the same UPC per transaction.
This is the biggest change in the current revision. If you think that means you can just split up your orders with 2 identical coupons in each order, remember that this part of the policy hasn’t changed and is still being enforced: Transactions cannot be broken up to avoid coupon stacking restrictions.
- Individual manufacturer coupons over $5 in value must be redeemed at a staffed checkout lane. Manufacturer coupons presented at self-checkout are limited to $5.
Some stores have been enforcing this for some time, depending on the level of fraud/counterfeiting they have experienced. Some locations have taped over the coupon slot at U-Scan registers and require coupons to be handed directly to a staff member for redemption. - Meijer does not accept competitor coupons intended for redemption at other retailers.
Meijer first allowed competitor coupons in 2012 and is now reversing the decision. No more competitor coupons. I think the level of cashier confusion with competitor coupons was high – many stores didn’t accept them anyway. - Meijer does not apply the excess value of a coupon to the order total if the value of the coupon is over the price of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
This has always been the result at the register – and most Meijer shoppers know this, though it was never clearly stated in the policy. No overage.
What is the Meijer store Coupon Acceptance policy?
Accepted coupon types include: Meijer, manufacturer, Catalina (Meijer and manufacturer), and mPerks within certain guidelines:
- Coupons must be presented on or before the expiration date.
- All coupon terms and conditions must be met and validated by the checkout register.
- Customers may use one manufacturer coupon (paper or digital) per item.
- Customers may only use two identical coupons with the same UPC per transaction.
- Customers may also combine one manufacturer coupon per item with applicable Meijer coupon(s) where allowed under couponredemption terms.
- In the event one manufacturer digital coupon is attempted together with one manufacturer paper coupon toward the purchase of the same item, the checkout register will prompt you to choose which to apply. The coupon not applied will be returned to you.
- Digital coupon acceptance is limited to mPerks only. Digital coupons from smartphone apps will not be accepted, but may be accepted in specific gas station locations.
- Reproduced/photo copied coupons will not be accepted.
- Transactions cannot be broken up to avoid coupon stacking restrictions.
- Separate checklanes will not be opened or designated for customers with large coupon orders.
- Individual manufacturer coupons over $5 in value must be redeemed at a staffed checkout lane. Manufacturer coupons presented at self-checkout are limited to $5.
- Manufacturer coupons and custom manufacturer coupons require the customer to pay sales tax on the full retail amount.
- Meijer, and Custom Meijer coupon require the customer to pay sales tax only on the discounted item price.
- Meijer does not accept competitor coupons intended for redemption at other retailers.
- If the value of a coupon is more than the price of the item after discounts or other coupons have been applied, the value of the couponwill be applied up to the reduced price of the item.
- Meijer does not apply the excess value of a coupon to the order total if the value of the coupon is over the price of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
- Meijer reserves the right to refuse coupons or limit coupon quantities and to determine the order of application of multiple couponsand/or promotions.
- Meijer does not accept paper coupons for digital orders.

Meijer management way too cheap to pass along any corporate tax savings to their workers from what i have heard. What a royal pain in the arse now to only be allowed a max of two like coupons per transaction! Same big dummy that came up with this brilliant idea probably the same idiot who dreamed up this week’s big BOGO 50% off sale which is an absolute insult to regular customers. Factor in so called sale prices that keep creeping up in their weekly flyers & steadfast refusal to issue rainchecks on mega sale items & Meijer’s bargains essentially can be only be spotted with a Hubble telescope!

Assistant manager stated to Meijer employee reason why new coupon policy was instituted because savvy shoppers armed with multiple coupons were cleaning out the items & selling them at flea markets? I seriously doubt the sincerity of Meijer management. I previously asked the assistant manager at Meijer why they didn’t order more quantity of items they planned on using for big sales because they had a minimum of two or more weeks to prepare & he stated they had no control about ordering the quantity they wanted? I think Meijer is pulling a page out of Marketing 101 called bait & switch. They figure if you are already in the store but they are sold out of a sale item you are going to probably buy something you didn’t originally plan on buying. More savvy Meijer shoppers need to angrily complain about their antiquated 20th century management. Computerized inventory gives management an almost 100% exact idea on what quantity they need to order for big sales.

First I want to say that Meijer treats it’s employees very well. We all just got raises And when I talked to friends at other stores, we make a little more/hour. And that’s for part time. As for how much is ordered, it is usually computer generated based on previous sales. USUALLY you can can a raincheck for sold out items.

Kroger just negotiated a new contract with union workers in my city. The best part is giving six month part-time workers $3.5K per year($21K max payout) towards their education in addition to a minimum of $11 hr(after 1 yr). The same union represents Meijer in my city & i seriously doubt they can hold a candle to Kroger’s new deal. You can Google for full details. Rainchecks are no longer given for weekly mega sale items or two day sale items.
P.S. Just like at any other retailer certain cashiers are definitely NOT couponer friendly. Know which ones bend over backwards to help & which ones to certainly avoid if you are a regular. Many cashiers have no clue what the hell they are talking about concerning coupons so you must know your stuff or be prepared to lose the battle before it even begins.

Actually they don’t have any control over ordering . A computer does it. Sale items come in on skids through out the week and what you get is what you get. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Can’t they adjust their order? Kroger has computer ordering but they can add more if they need to.

My area Meijer stores were continually being wiped clean of inventory, sometimes on the first day of a sale. I was told by management that certain couponers were demanding cases of product from the back after wiping the shelves clean. If the new policy allows everyone a fair shot at getting in on a promotion, then I commend Meijer for taking care of its loyal followers instead of serving the needs of the cherry pickers. Numerous Instagram posts have depicted one extreme couponer after the next bragging about their free Meijer shopping cart “hauls,” multiple transactions at the register, and where to purchase multiple manufacturer coupons online. Thanks to greed on the part of a few, we all will now pay the price as Meijer limits like manufacturer coupons to 2 per transaction. Meijer had no choice but to address an issue that had gotten out of hand and was turning away faithful shoppers who had grown tired of seeing empty shelves.

The last time I used coupons at Ft. Gratiot Meijer (which was already a couple of months ago now), they were saying limit one and handed the second one back. Wonder if they’re still saying that or if they’ll accept 2 now.

It makes me sad to see Meijer going downhill! In my area (Indiana), they went from being a great new store a few decades ago, with tons of deals and double coupons, to now being higher-priced than Kroger on most things and tightening up on coupon use a lot. Ah well, we all have to change with the times.
Chris says
Kroger limit is 5 identical coupons. Giant Eagle cashier recently told me theirs is 4 though most cashiers accept 5. Meijer definitely went ultra conservative on this. I’ve no problem with limitations to spread the joy but wish it had been more in line with the competition. Thankfully I have the other two merchants as viable options along with Aldi for my produce so over time, my frequency at Meijer has fallen, a trend likely to continue. I just hope the rest of the grocers don’t follow this lead.

Reproduced/photo copied coupons will not be accepted.
This is so annoying because it is up to the Meijer employee’s opinion if it is copied or not.
I have brought in coupons I freshly printed off the computer from coupons.com, and was denied applying my coupon because they claimed it was a copied coupon.
Anytime I have came back to customer service with the coupon, they will apply it. But only after treating me like garbage, and asking one or two other people if they think the coupon is copied or original.

I disagree Meijer is changing the policy so the shelves stay stocked. The shelf clearers will still clear the shelves, it will just take longer at checkout because they will have to go back through line numerous times. I doubt I will continue to coupon now the limit is 2. I have a family of 5 and it will be more of a hassle than it will be worth to buy only 2 items. After 10 years, I think I had a good run. I just never really thought I would see the day when I would zip my binder for good. I have truly enjoyed your web site. I have save time and money with your help. Thank you.

Since last year i have donated thousands of food items, school supplies & health/beauty items to my local food pantry. Kroger’s last mega sale had ZERO .49 cent pasta items i could use as cheap fillers. Adding insult to injury now with Meijer’s new coupon policy rearing it’s ugly head & i guesstimate my future donations will drop by 50%. Wish i had been donating like this for the past few years as scouring several websites daily for local bargains was my new found hobby. This is surely a sign to move on to a different hobby!

I think their policy should be geared towards restrictions on only Internet printable coupons. That is where 100% of the fraud comes from. But limit to 4 at least like most of the other competitive stores.
The Meijer closest to me is a bit of a drive and with this recent coupon change, I will he going even less now, just isn’t worth the gas.
Catherine S Coburn says
What happens when they say buy 5 items and get $.50 off each. You have 5 coupons for that item…..since you must buy 5 to get the savings will you be able to use 5 coupons?????
Jolyn says
You’ll only be able to use 2 coupons. The Buy 5 Items promotion are always mix and match, so you’d never need to buy 5 of an identical item.
Missy Wheeler says
Well there went all of meijers customers. They don’t open up any lanes with a human hardly and they stated they will not open one for a big order. I was about done with them anyway. When it went to 7.00 off of you spend so much to 2.00 off. Just one less store to go to.
Ashley says
Meijer has an inventory problem because their ordering system lacks. I’m sorry but I have always been a loyal Meijer shopper and couponers are not a threat. They are constantly running out of sale items and regular items that you can’t use coupons for. Meijer should never run out of hamburger or bread which they have on several occasions. They should limit coupons to 4 like most other stores do. I don’t like people who clear the shelves either but when the shelves were never stocked in the first place you can’t blame couponers.
