VG’s COUPON REDEMPTION GUIDELINES

As posted in the store:

The following guidelines have been established in order to keep our prices low, remain competitive and ensure availability of product for all our customers.

  • Product listed on coupon must be purchased in order for coupon to be redeemed.
  • We will redeem only one coupon per product.
  • Coupon must have a valid expiration date. We are unable to redeem if expiration date has been cut off.
  • We are happy to double coupons up to and including $0.50 cents (up to $1.00 applicable).
  • There is a limit of 3 like coupons per household/per day, including multiple varieties. We are unable to split orders to assist in exceeding these limits.
  • Coupons that state “Do Not Double” will be redeemed at face value only.
  • Coupon value, including the amount being doubled, shall not exceed the price the product is sold for.
  • In-store promotional coupons (Catalina) will be generated based on value of product “after” deduction of Manufacturer/Store coupon(s).
  • We are happy to accept internet printable coupons, however, we are unable to accept photocopies of these coupons.
  • On a “buy one get one free” offer, we will redeem a coupon for the item being purchased only. We are unable to redeem coupons for the items that are being offered free.

VG’s SHOPPING TIPS

VG’s offers a $0.05 reusable bag credit per bag you bring. You may have to remind your cashier, however, as the credit is not automatic.

You’ll find printable Spartan coupons at the Turn to Spartan website. You’ll need to register first. Coupons will NOT double, but they could stretch your savings on Spartan brands even further.

Save your receipts – as part of VG’s Community Share Program, they can benefit non-profit groups in Michigan. You don’t need to sign up; simply find a participating group and submit your receipts. Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica uses the Community Share Program to purchase socks for the homeless. You can leave your receipts at the front desk there if you can’t find another organization.

Shopping with Kids? Stop by the customer service desk and sign them up for the Zoo Crew Kids’ Club. They’ll receive special treats, including a cookie from the bakery when they visit!

VG’s will no longer double $1.00 coupons effective 8-14-2011.

    • Jolyn says

      July 31, 2011 at 12:14 AM

That’s the WORST couponing news I’ve heard all year. 🙁

      • Kathryn says

        August 1, 2011 at 6:16 PM

I just called the Sterling Hts. 18 & Ryan store. The manager confirmed that the double to $1.00 will be stopping within the next few weeks OR SOONER. She said that she thinks that they will be doubling to $.50 as that is what it used to be. bummer…….

        • Becky says

          August 4, 2011 at 12:14 PM

The Vgs in Fenton has also confirmed that they will only double up to 50 cents after August 14th as well….luckily I live in Genesee county so I still have Kroger…

          • McKee says

            August 4, 2011 at 9:44 PM

Heard from a source that Kroger is not dbl coupons as well. When VGs found out that Kroger isnt doing it, that is when they decided to stop doing it as well because they wont have them as compeditors any more. Bummer.

    • Jennifer says

      July 31, 2011 at 7:38 AM

That’s completely horrible! So are they going to double at all?

    • chris says

      July 31, 2011 at 8:50 AM

I called the Owosso store and they will still be doubling $1.00 coupons. The manager said it is only certain stores. Call your store and check it out.

      • Kimmy says

        August 2, 2011 at 6:06 PM

I am relieved to hear that the Owosso Vg’s will still be doubling coupons but am sorry for all my other “couponing sisters and brothers” out there who also need to save money=(

    • Kay says

      July 31, 2011 at 10:22 AM

      How do you know this??

    • Michelle says

      July 31, 2011 at 10:23 AM

Vanessa, What city’s Vg’s store are you referring to?

      • VANESSA says

        July 31, 2011 at 10:55 PM

The one on Walton told me that yesterday morning!

  2. Christie says

    July 31, 2011 at 7:31 AM

    I agree!

  3. Captain Disco says

    July 31, 2011 at 8:34 AM

The only reason I shopped at that dump was because of their coupon policy.

    • VANESSA says

      July 31, 2011 at 10:57 PM

I agree. Their prices have always been much more expensive than other grocery stores, and only because of them doubling $1 was the only reason I shopped there. I hope the one on Highland Road don’t follow suit.

  4. KAR says

    July 31, 2011 at 9:03 AM

They are probably stopping the doubling due to the fact people are not following the rules and scamming them for instance this rule:

■On a “buy one get one free” offer, we will redeem a coupon for the item being purchased only. We are unable to redeem coupons for the items that are being offered free.

I have seen people argue with the cashiers to try and override this policy, unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Elizabeth says

    July 31, 2011 at 10:12 AM

If that’s true for the 18 and Ryan store I will no longer be shopping at VG’s. Their prices are too high otherwise.

  6. Michelle says

    July 31, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Last week, I was at the VG’s in WhiteLake and overheard a manger complaining to staff about coupons matching-up to sale items. I was 5 feet from him, strapping 3 kids and a coupon binder… ironic to have such a conversation when I’m standing right in front of you.

    • Jodi says

      July 31, 2011 at 12:22 PM

Wow, that was in poor taste on his part.
I, too, am wondering which stores are not longer doubling. I am guessing Brighton will be one since they are a Fresh Market mstore and already have a different ad than the rest and seem to try to bill themselves as a “higher end” store. What bummer news.

  7. jessica says

    July 31, 2011 at 11:38 AM

VG’s IS a dump! They offically have lost my buisness. I hate having my coupons scrutinized by stressed sales associates (whose jobs are threatened by any coupon errors) only to purchase seriously overpriced groceries. I find the 20 mile drive to a Kroger that doubles up to 1.00 well worth it.

  8. Mike says

    July 31, 2011 at 12:24 PM

land o frost coupon is in 7-24 rp, not 7-24 ss.

  9. Autumn says

    July 31, 2011 at 12:25 PM

Keeping my fingers crossed there will be at least one store within driving distance that still doubles to $1.00… otherwise, no more VG’s for me! : (

  10. Lynn says

    July 31, 2011 at 1:00 PM

I just called shelby twp store and employe rayan said they had not heard about this and to their knowledge they will continue to accept & dbl 1.00 qs. I really hooping this info is correct!!!!! 🙂

    • Jolyn says

      July 31, 2011 at 1:59 PM

I’m sure it’s correct for now. They wouldn’t tell employees until it was time for the change to be enforced.

    • Marianna Ruffino says

      July 31, 2011 at 9:34 PM

Hope he’s right or no VG’s for me. I agree, too high prices.

  11. Michelle says

    July 31, 2011 at 1:37 PM

Maybe they should lower some of their ridiculous prices to an acceptable/comparable price and then customers, like myself may be inclined to do more of their shopping there while using their coupons instead of just purchasing the sale & double coupon items. I think they would generate more business this way. Just my thoughts.

    • coupon guy says

      July 31, 2011 at 4:59 PM

amen sister 🙂 they often times charge 30% more for the same items.

  12. Nicole says

The Meuller whole wheat pasta is stll $10/10 this week, so free after 7/10 coupon.

    July 31, 2011 at 2:31 PM

Just called brighton, there is talk but nothing confirmed on which stores. He said they will know more in the next few weeks. So i hope they do not change 🙂

  14. Jary says

    July 31, 2011 at 3:20 PM

I asked at Howell VG’s this morning and was told it wasn’t true.

  15. Autumn says

    July 31, 2011 at 4:28 PM

I was there yesterday and the same cashier who has in the past whipped through scanning my coupons was very carefully reading each one (yes, even the small print, which is how I learned my Silk soy milk coupon states “do not double” — but only on the last line that paragraph of fine print – not at the top by the date where you would normally see it). Anyway, he actually THANKED me for not yelling at him for taking his time with the coupons… he has had couponers yell at him for scrutinizing the coupons. I don’t mind if they take the time to do this if it keeps people from cheating (and keeps it so we can use our coupons). Everything was fine and I left the store with all the savings I expected (other than the Silk coupon!). He said it was understandable that people are trying to save money, but the store is trying to make sure that if a coupon is used, the item/s matching it have actually been sold, that they don’t double when they shouldn’t, etc. Sounds reasonable to me.

  16. coupon guy says

    July 31, 2011 at 4:45 PM

the price for the Aunt Millie’s buns should probably be 55 cents higher given that every coupon i’ve ever seen for them has stated on it “do not double.” as stated on other posts, they’ve been reading the coupons very carefully, even finding where it says “do not double” in the fine print away from the normal location.

    • motherof4 says

      August 3, 2011 at 9:57 AM

i just make the drive to the aunt millies outlet once a month. i find myself frustrated with coupons these days.. im finding its more of a pain than what its worth. most of the time i get to the store and the products i wont are gone anyway.ive went back a few days later still sold out.im spending more in gas sometimes than its worth.

      • Kimmy says

        August 5, 2011 at 3:20 PM

I get frustrated with the stores being out of items too but I’ve found that rainchecks are a couponers best friend!!!

I need some batteries, can anyone please tell me what the regular price is of duracell and energizer four packs? Thanks

    • Jessi says

      July 31, 2011 at 10:24 PM

I have been buying my batteries at Michaels or JoAnns when I have a 40% of coupon of one item that I get either from email or the newspaper. I never really find any great deals otherwise. Hope that helps 🙂

      • Cindy says

        August 1, 2011 at 12:02 AM

Stephen, My krogers has energizer batteries 4 ct for 2/5.00 making them .50 a pack if you got the new coupon that came out today for 1.00 off which doubles making that 2.00 off.Good luck!

GREAT idea!! I never thought of that!

    • Kelly says

      August 1, 2011 at 1:37 AM

      Vg’s usually has 4 packs of AA’s for $2.99.

  18. Victoria says

    July 31, 2011 at 9:54 PM

There always has to be a rotten apple(s) that ruin it for everyone. Now the vgs staff aren’t nice to us and even rude to the nice ones. No need to be mean. They should be thankful they’re even drumming up Any business at this rate. Over-priced, however, clean.

Shame on you coupon scammers. Pretty stupid if you ask me. Last time I checked stealing is STILL a sin.

    • Kimmy says

      I totally agree Victoria!!!

I will be very sad if VG’s stops doubling up to $1. I, too, only shop there because of it. Sadly, in my town we only have a Kroger- VG’s is just a 10 minute drive up the road so I tend to shop there. Luckily, I have never had a bad experience at the Marine City location. Not only are all the clerks nice about my coupons, they are usually excited to see the savings! Granted, we live in a small town, the baggers actually take your groceries out to your car and load them up, quite a difference from the one I’ve visited in Shelby Twp. I will be doing my shopping there today and will ask if anyone has heard the news. If they will continue the policy, I highly recommend this store. If you are an honest couponer they treat you very well!!

    • heather says

      August 1, 2011 at 12:27 PM

i agree the marine city vgs has very good customer service and they do get excited to see how much you saved i too live in algonac if thats where you are referring to and hopefully this vgs doesnt stop doubling coupons for us it would be quite a drive to go somewhere else where they do double our coupons also recommend this store 🙂

      • Shelley says

        August 1, 2011 at 1:40 PM

I also live in Algonac and split my shopping between Kroger & VG’s- A cashier at VG’s actually congratulated me one day for my final total being less than 1/2 of the original bill 😀 but I personally prefer Kroger’s brand (& prices) to Spartan’s.
AB, Please let us know what the MC VG’s has to say about the policy change, please & thank you 🙂

        • AB says

          August 1, 2011 at 2:50 PM

I didn’t get any info 🙁 Seemed no one had heard of this happening, though like Jolyn said, they may not know yet. I really hope not!! I saved almost half today, paid $83 and saved $76! I, too, split my shopping between the two… I don’t think either of them are all that great, to be honest. I try to buy my produce at Nino’s or Randazzo’s on my way home from work if they have the things on sale that I need. Three weeks in a row VG’s strawberries have been awful!

What a pain. The people at the Vg’s in Walton were always so nice to me and their shelves were always stocked (most of the time) with the things I needed. So sad to see it be taken away but I guess it was bound to happen one day. Maybe business will go down and they will bring it back. Oh well, got my Meijer.

I shop the waterford store, and I don’t think it is a dump! I totally agree with the other bloggers about it being a dump, I have always had good luck at waterford vg’s the managers and staff never have a problem with looking in the back for stock that may be out on the shelf. I think that more importantly we as coupon shoppers should remember that we have to follow the rules and not get a deal by scamming. If the cashiers call out the ppl scamming sucks to be them! Getting a great deal and keeping your integrity should be just as important.

You may want to check out the clearance section at your local VG’s… today I got free purell from there using the $1.00 off coupon (don’t know which insert it was in). Original price $3.29, which is clearanced 50%. I also got Grain Berry cereal at 50% off 4.69, with a $1.00/1 coupon (also don’t know which insert that came from), making it about .35 a box! This was at the Caro VG’s, but you may want to check your coupons and the nearest store!

I’ve never been to any VG’s besides the Caro store, and while there are some people working there who get upset when they have to deal with the coupons, most of the time they are very nice to me, most recognize me and my little girls, and love to tell me when I’ve saved more than I spent (I do almost all my shopping there since my alternative is Wal-mart, which I dont really like). They ARE more discerning on coupons these days, but I really don’t mind because I’m not trying to cheat anyone, and I don’t want them to get in trouble over a coupon not ringing up correctly! It’s too bad that not all stores in this chain are like that, but our store offers to help you out to your car as well, and work hard to make sure our shopping trip is a good one! Just crossing my fingers that our store keeps the coupon doubling, because it IS expensive if it isn’t on sale there!

I called the Schoenherr Rd. location and the person that answered the phone said he didn’t know but said I could speak to a manager. I spoke with a lady (I think her name was Judy) and she said that it was true. I told her that I don’t live close to a location and that I drive from North avenue to shop there just because they double coupons. I explained that if they stop then I won’t be shopping there any longer because Meijer is much closer to me. She said that it was not a store decisiob but a corporate one and suggested that I write an email. She said she was sorry to lose my business.

From what I heard, it won’t be all of the VG’s stores stopping, certain ones. In addition to that, I don’t agree at all with other users on here calling VG’s a dump. You don’t realize what the associates go through, upset customers, corporate making decisions without asking, and cutting the hours down. They do the BEST they can to help and support you, and double couponing isn’t exactly helping them, it can cost some stores thousands of dollars per week (this is NOT exaggerated) to double coupons. I will still shop there and support a local business rather than taking by business to Kroger or Wal-Mart. And they will continue doubling for 50 cents and that still will save me, PLUS if it does end, I would expect better sales, MORE YES rewards (and they have saved me a ton, love the free stuff), and lower prices across the board.

I just hate reading this site and seeing all of the bashing that goes on without people knowing the entire story, you have to realize the employees of VG’s do the best they can and I appreciate everything, and NO MATTER WHAT I would never call a retail outlet that has done so much for the state a dump, what a horrible term to use just because you can’t save a few extra dollars, please be more considerate! What if you were a VG’s employee and stumbled upon this?

I agree with you Ken, I think VG’s has a lot to offer. I do think some of their non sale prices are high but, there are lot’s of non coupon savings too! I find the employees in Brighton are fantastic but, I don’t try to scam them either. Yesterday, I bought bogo watermelon/cantalope = $1.99 each; salmon $5.99 (steamed for free); Doritos 2/$5 all good prices imo and YES lets support local businesses!!

VERY well-stated, Ken! I happen to enjoy shopping at VG’s, and have since they opened near me… I shopped there when they only doubled to $0.50 and would continue to shop if they go back to that policy. If the stores are losing money on doubling (and the cashiers are having to spend more time scrutinizing coupons, getting yelled at for not bending rules, etc.), then I certainly wouldn’t expect them to continue. We should be thankful that stores in our area double coupons at all — grocery stores in many areas outside Metro Detroit do not double anything.

Fenton silverparkway Vg’s will only be doubling coupons up to .50 effective 8/14 I believe. North Leroy location has no news of any change as of yet. I am personally dissapointed. I have never spoken poorly about Vg’s but they are in general over priced imho. I will be giving Kroger all of my business because frankly I cannot afford to feed my family on a budget with this policy and their prices. Well it hurts to not shop there I am an honest couponer and can find better deals elsewhere.

Hopefully, Jolyn will still be able to take the time to do the VG’s matchups and we can decide on our own whether or not to continue to shop there. VG’s corporate may notice a drop in profits or a drop in the number of customers and it may sway there decision. We just have to wait and see what happens. They really don’t ‘owe’ us anything as customers and as customers we have the right to take our business elsewhere.

If they only switch the one that will be odd here but I don’t think the North End of town here in Fenton gets as much traffic. I am cool with that one staying $1 they have less stock but I don’t mind rain checks. I will most likely only go for meat if they both drop to .50 cent doubling with the everyday pricing I just cannot afford it. It isn’t a matter of giving a local store business besides they sold out already it is a matter of meeting my budget.

It wasn’t the employees choice of a buy out so you shouldn’t say “they” because “they” moved to Florida. And if you didn’t know Spartan Stores is a Michigan based company, so you are still supporting the state, which is who really needs it.

I shopped at North Fenton recently and they were out as well as Silver Parkway. I would love to continue to support them but it is more economical for me to shop elsewhere. I called the North location and they said they had no changes planned. I guess that takes care of that, lol. So is 8/14 the magic date?

  34. elfman says

    August 4, 2011 at 1:16 AM

things have been changing fast since Spartan bought the chain from the Van Gilders. Kroger still appreciates customers but as with all competition they will most likely follow suit. That being said, if you think people cheat the system now??? Just wait until they stop taken coupons.

  36. Eric says

    August 4, 2011 at 6:45 PM

Well I knew it was going to come to this. If people want to blame someone then put the blame on the morons who cheat the system. The ones who use photocopied coupons, illegal coupons, expired coupons, trying to use coupons on b1g1 free items, feeding blank pieces of paper in the machines at the self check outs etc. The rest of us who follow the coupon policies and rules now suffer all because these people want to scam the system. If a coupon doesn’t double when the cashier scans it then no big deal. I don’t cause a scene in the store or shout at the cashier. If you look at most stores, they have stricter rules then Vg’s does when it comes to their coupon policy and it’s thanks to the people that ruined it for everyone else.
To the ones who say that Vg’s has high prices, sure on some items they do but I challenge you to walk into Kroger and look at the same item and on most items that Vg’s carries you’ll find that Kroger is still higher. With no coupons at all and just ad prices my wife and I found that we spent far more money at Kroger then we did at Vg’s and got less to. The others who say they are going to stop shopping at Vg’s now all because they are giving you up to a buck less on each coupon you have that can be doubled? doesn’t make much sense to me. We were at Vg’s in shelby the other day and we saved 48.00 and we had a few coupons but the rest were all store savings. At least Vg’s offers points which you can redeem them for free items in the store. Does Kroger offer that? No.
I can’t tell you how many times that we have been in a Meijer or Kroger and have been treated rudely, pallets blocking the Isles, 1 checkout lane open, No baggers, overcrowded etc. If you notice at least Vg’s has the courtesy to put their pallets in the middle to where you can walk around on both sides and it doesn’t block the Isle. We have shopped all the stores and we save more with Vg’s then any other store. I refuse to support Walmart at all and I don’t care if they have the lowest price or not. Vg’s we can go there anytime and always find someone to help us and they are always friendly. We haven’t had one bad experience at Vg’s.

I used to work for Vg’s and I was still employed with them when Spartan bought them. Yes Spartan imposed their policies and rules and yes their rules were quite strict so that’s why I think some of the employees today aren’t as friendly as when they were owned by the Vanguilders. Honestly they were a very nice family that cared about their employees and did a lot for us. They gave bonuses even when times were bad. I was quite happy working for a family like that. One of the main reasons why they sold was because their health was declining so it wouldn’t have been good to keep going.
I wouldn’t go as far as calling a Vg’s store a dump. If a store needs improvement visually then that’s as simple as sending a email or calling Spartan and voicing your concerns about that particular store. It’s come this this only because of the coupon abusers and maybe they will just take it away for awhile and then bring it back. Then maybe people would learn to abide by the policies. There’s no need for people to yell at the cashiers about why they can’t double a coupon when it can’t be doubled or yell at them for not taking an expired coupon. I do 90% of my shopping at Vg’s and the other 10% is at Value Center.

First I am a big fan of B2B…love what you do…I actually learned of your site at VG’s from a customer complaining to a cashier about you. I personally have been couponing for about 1 1/2 years. I just want to say all the changes at Vg’s and many other stores can be attributed to the show Extreme Couponing. My personal opinion is that once couponing was brought out in the open,it did not look good. I expect more changes to come.

I do not wipe out shelves nor do I copy coupons or try to sneak any invalid coupons in, which seems to be the feeling I get about the people on this forum. Thanks to YOU, with the help of B2B I can take the time to cut coupons to match with sales FAIRLY and get good deals for my family of 5 that is on a very tight budget. I totally agree with you Frank. I think we have TLC to thank for their fabricated show. From what I understand some of the stores in those episodes waved their coupon policy for the shoppers(I did alittle on line research). Everyone looks at those shoppers and shakes their head but the truth is that they wouldn’t be clearing shelves if the store wouldn’t let them. Anyone breaking a policy is easily caught if they are buying 2000 toothbrushes. LOL!!! I can’t believe that someone was pointing fingers at Bargains to Bounty!! That is crazy!!! It is impossible to clear shelves with a 3 coupon limit!!! It isn’t against the law to save money or to help someone save money!!! I think we can point the finger to those couponers who are sneaky and breaking the law and knowing all the while they are doing it!!! Or the couponers at our Kroger that were using the $10 off crest whitestrips to buy a toothbrushes and getting the entire $10 credit off their bill. Oh yeah!! I have no problem pointing a finger at them!!! Shame on them for getting cashiers fired!! But I won’t point the finger at couponers just trying to do the best they can with the resources they have or B2B that assists us with this mission!!! I love this web site!! Thanks so much!!! I must add that I am not liking this stigma that couponers are getting. Most of the couponers I know are doing it honestly!!!
