What Can YOU Do to Stimulate Michigan’s Economy?

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my full disclosure policy.

If every household started spending just $10 per week
of their current grocery budget on locally grown foods,
we’d keep more than $37 million each week circulating within Michigan’s economy.
Fact supplied by the
Michigan Dept of Agriculture

I just recently found out that Old Orchard is a Michigan based company and I am even more thrilled to purchase their products! This is a great article!

Two that I notcied are not on your list is Bell’s Beer and Kebbler. Whenever we have a party with beer we always buy Bell’s. Their resturant in Kalamazoo is AWESOME!!! And of course we LOVE Kebbler!
Hiller’s is awesome because they actually have signs by the Michigan made products in their stores, so you know when you are shopping.

I was under the impression that Bob Evans was based in Ohio? If not, then I feel that much better purchasing their products, as my children will not eat any other breakfast sausage.

Better Made Potato Chips is based in Detroit – on Gratiot, near French Rd. (just north of I-94)…that is my favorite Michigan brand. 🙂

Better Made chips are the ONLY chips I eat!!! My husband often stops right into the store at the factory and buys them when he is out in Detroit for work

I know you do not post Wal-mart and I rarely shop there, but if you do you will notice they have signs by the made in michigan products. I think all stores should do this it may sway people to buy locally.

Thank you for this! I always tell people one of the things I buy whether it is on sale or not, is Pioneer or Big Chief sugar, because they are made in MI! Many of the beets are grown near our home here in Saginaw county! I don’t mind paying a bit extra for sugar when I know the local beet farmers, whose kids go to the same schools as mine, are benefiting from it.

My brother grows sugar beets (but not in Saginaw County)!

El Matador tortilla chips are the only kind we like to buy and are made in Grand Rapids! They’re delicious!

Thanks for all the great brands! I always try to support local Michigan brands. Another thing I like to do is shop at local farmers market. They have a great farmers market in Flint that has one a few national contests recently!

This is perfect- my first grader’s class is having a Taste of Michigan event with all Michigan based foods! Shopping local is another great way to support your neighbors- most smaller stores are locally owned or your neighbors work there!

Does anyone know if Meijer brand food products are actually made in MI?

  17. Chris says

Guernsey Farms Dairy in Northville — milk, ice cream, yogurt. Just went to a Taste Fest there last weekend.

  18. Rachel says

I don’t shop at Whole Foods often, primarily because it’s quite expensive, but they have those local signs up, too. Since they do carry so many brands of things that are regional, they can provide products from smaller companies. I bought some raw honey recently from a local farm (whose name I forget at the moment, unfortunately) at WF and it was definitely worth the extra money.

Another way to BOOST the economy while shopping at these Michigan companies is to PAY CASH for your purchases! Even if it means stopping at the ATM on the way, I pay cash as often as possible. Even if you use your debit card, these companies are hit with credit card processing fees for your purchase (which fees have to be passed on to consumers). That is why some gas stations give a discount for cash. If we all work together and start paying cash whenever possible, we can do our part to turn this mess around. 🙂

Thanks! I will make sure to do just that. I will buy more Michigan products!

And I shared it on fb!
