I’m excited to share that local photographer and Bargains to Bounty contributor, Lisabeth Posthuma, has just published her first novel, Songs Eight Six! Lisabeth is not only a treasured friend of mine, but a gifted writer as well – and I can’t wait for you to read her book!
Want to take a quick peek?

An Interview with Songs Eight Six Author, Lisabeth Posthuma
Lisabeth was recently interviewed by Shelley Johannes of The Book Diaries. Here’s what she had to say:
Shelley: I read an early copy of Songs Eight Six months ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it. It’s obvious that you have writing in your bones. Has writing always been your way of expressing yourself?
Lisabeth: You know, it’s always been just what I did—short stories as a child, a major in English in college, blogging as an adult—but I never thought I could actually write a whole book. It seemed like such an unattainable dream to have. It still does, actually. I think part of me is still in disbelief that it actually happened!
Shelley: I am endlessly intrigued when authors discuss the origin of their stories, the catalyst. What was the spark that ignited Songs Eight Six in your creative brain?
Lisabeth: I have always loved books as a form of entertainment, but the books that stuck with me through the years were the ones I felt taught a bigger life lesson or gave imparted some sort of wisdom. I knew that if I was going to take the time to write a book, I wanted it to be one I felt contributed positively in that realm of “meaningful.” When I considered who I wanted my audience to be—it was easy. I’m a former high school teacher, and I originally chose that profession (before starting a family) because I have a passion for teenagers and young adults. This was also the age that I personally was searching for answers to life’s bigger questions—What’s my purpose? What do I want to do with my life?—and I wanted to write a novel that I feel would have aided me greatly during that quest.
Shelley: Rural Middlebury, Indiana is the setting for this partially supernatural story. I believe you grew up in this area. How did the hometown location play into the roots of the story?
Lisabeth: I never realized how unique my hometown area was until I left it for one about ten times its size. I rarely left Northern Indiana for the first 25 years of my life. Now that I’ve been away for some time, I have the perspective to see it more objectively. Authors write what they know, and I wanted to be able to authentically shape my characters’ home, so I shared mine with them.
Shelley: The story is told in first person, with eighteen-year-old Cosette as the narrator. Cosette is presented with an irrevocable decision, a decision that will cost her greatly — whatever she decides. Did you always know what her answer would be?
Lisabeth: I did. But there were times I had no idea why she would choose what she does. I was torn between the options, just like she was.
Shelley: My favorite novels are the ones that change me, that shift my perception of myself or the world around me. SONGS EIGHT SIX affected me that way. What do you hope for your readers as they read this story?
Lisabeth: I hope exactly that. I hope that they reflect on Cosette’s struggle and decision and put themselves in her shoes. I hope that they end the story both with a satisfaction at its resolve but also with questions about how her story relates to them.
Shelley: One of things I love about your novel is that even the secondary characters are so real. My husband and I have spent hours discussing their futures. Please tell us there is more to come. Is there a second book in the works?
Lisabeth: Yes, there is. There was one storyline I intentionally wrapped up very sloppily… and it will headline the sequel.
