What I’ve learned about the Ibotta Rewards App – plus example shopping trips!

Screen Shot 2012-12-29 at 11.53.14 AMI’ve been experimenting with the new money-saving ibotta app (available for iPhone or Android devices, including tablets). Along with other readers who have been skeptical about a program that sounds too good to be true, I’m currently quite pleased with this program overall. It’s easy, even for non-coupon users, and rewards are almost instant.

Other perks:

  • The rewards appear AFTER your purchase has been completed. At this time, coupons are not excluded or restricted on the products you purchase.
  • You’ll get paid in PayPal cash – or you can donate your earnings directly to your favorite school.
  • Get a $5 signup bonus when you register with my referral link (then download the app to your device afterwards).

Examples: Shopping at Meijer with ibotta rewards!

After taking advantage of the Meijer sales on Frosted Flakes, Rice Krispies and Town House Crackers, I combined great prices with coupons and ibotta rewards to get these deals:

$2.50 Kellogg’s Family Size Cereal – Frosted Flakes 19-23 oz., Rice Krispies 18 oz.
$0.50/1 Frosted Flakes printable coupon or $1.00/2 Kellogg’s coupon (from 12-9 RP or printable)
$1.50-$2.00 each after coupon
Ibotta Rewards: Earn $1.25 back when you buy Frosted Flakes and $1.00 when you buy Rice Krispies
As low as $0.25 for Frosted Flakes after coupon and reward!

$1.67 Keebler Town House or Club Crackers 9.6-16 oz
-$1.00/2 Keebler coupon (from 11-11 or 12-9 RP)
$1.17 each when you buy 2 with coupon
Ibotta Rewards: Earn $1.00 back when you buy Town House Crackers
$0.66 each when you buy 2 after coupon and ibotta rewards

I returned home from my shopping trip, scanned my receipt and the item UPC code and had $3.25 in rewards in my account within minutes. I was amazed!

Even better, the next day I found NEW ibotta rewards in my account that I wasn’t expecting:

  • Earn $1.00 when you buy Frosted Flakes
  • Earn $1.00 when you buy Keebler Club Crackers

Of course, it’s just too hard to pass up deals like this. A family size box of Frosted Flakes for $0.50 after discounts? I had to make another trip before the sale ended! I also had $1.50/1 Kellogg’s Family Rewards coupons to spend, which made the deals REALLY sweet. I know those great coupons give me an unfair advantage that you might not have, but I wanted to share my trip anyway. Here’s my second shopping trip:

$1.67 Keebler Town House or Club Crackers (sale through Dec 29)
$1.50/1 Kellogg’s printable coupon (Family Rewards point redemption)
$0.17 after coupon
Ibotta rewards: Earn $1.00 when you buy Club Crackers

$1.99 Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, 8 ct (price drop)
$1.50/1 Kellogg’s printable coupon (Family Rewards point redemption)
$0.49 after coupon
Ibotta rewards: Earn $1.25 when you buy Rice Krispies Treats

$2.50 Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, 19 oz (sale through Dec 29)
$0.50/1 Kellogg’s printable coupon
$1.50 after coupon
Ibotta rewards: Earn $1.00 when you buy Frosted Flakes

$2.50 Sunshine Cheez-It Crackers, 9 oz
$1.50/1 Kellogg’s printable coupon (Family Rewards point redemption)
$1.00 after coupon
Ibotta rewards: Earn $1.00 when you buy Cheez-It crackers

I spent $3.16 at Meijer. While my husband pumped gas, I took photos of my receipt and UPC codes using the ibotta app in the car! By the time we got home, I had $4.25 more in ibotta rewards in my account. A moneymaker trip!

I think ibotta knows I’m hooked. The next reward that appeared in my account? $1.00 when you buy Town House Flipsides crackers, also included in the sale for $1.67.

What I’ve learned about ibotta

I’ve enjoyed getting to know the ibotta app on my smartphone (you can also use it on your tablet, if you have a new enough operating system). Here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • While everyone might get the same offers to start with, new offers are based on your purchases. Ibotta keeps tempting me with new Keebler cracker coupons, for example. Other readers have a $0.50 DiGiorno pizza reward (that goes great with the Meijer DiGiorno deal), but I didn’t get one.
  • Redeeming offers isn’t that complicated. You’ll need to take a photo of your ENTIRE receipt from top to bottom in sections (this is easier if you can keep ibotta items in a separate order, but you don’t need to). Scanning the UPC code confirms that you purchased the right item.
  • Some of you were concerned about the permissions required to sign up for ibotta, since it states that you’ll allow the app “to read data about your contacts stored on your phone, including the frequency with which you’ve called, emailed, or communicated in other ways with specific individuals.” Concerned as well, I contacted ibotta directly. Their response:

“The text you pulled out is just the standard Android permissions text that Google provides. We never send your entire contact list to our servers – only email addresses you select.  We also don’t keep tabs in any way on who you call, who you email, or how frequently. We only use this functionality to support friend invites – just pulling the emails to send the invitations to. Sorry for the misunderstanding!”

  • If you have any concerns or problems, you can contact support@ibotta.com for assistance. They seem very committed to working out bugs and making the program a success.

I too have been experimenting with ibotta. Some what confused. I purchased multiple products thinking when I accessed the reward once and scanned one barcode and took a picture of my receipt that multiple rewards would be issued at one time. Apparently that is not the case. So when I went back I found that the item dissapared. So, for example if I purchased six boxes of rice krispies how do I get the respective rewards? Also, do you have to select the reward prior to your shopping trip? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Limit ONE offer reward – no multiples (just like a digital coupon can’t be used for multiples). If you purchased 6 Rice Krispies, you’d still get only one reward.

You don’t HAVE to select the reward before your shopping trip, though you’ll need to before you can redeem it. And rewards can disappear, so if you see one you’ll think you’ll use you should grab it right away. I was hoping to use the $1.25/1 Neosporin ointment, for example, and today it’s gone from my account. You wouldn’t want to buy the item to get the offer and then find the offer is no longer available.

I just signed up too and have not seen my $5 credit. I sent them an email…waiting to hear back

If you just signed up, you won’t see the $5 credit until you redeem your first offer (purchase a product, scan a receipt, etc). Then it will appear.

I purchased some items I had selected on Ibotta. I took a picture of the receipt, but I could never get the app to scan the UPC code. I have an Android phone. Does any one have ideas of what might be wrong? Thanks.

I am using my IPod Touch also. I didn’t see anything about scanning the UPC’s. I scanned my receipt & received my first reward within a few hours. I submitted another receipt last night at 9:00 & have not received that reward yet.

I tried my first submission today and did everything as required. After submitting photo of receipt and scanning barcodes, I got a message emailed back that said the store I used currently wasn’t a supported store for Ibotta. It was Meijer. Shouldn’t all Meijers work since its a national chain? Anyone used these at the Findlay Meijer yet? I emailed customer service today, hopefully they’ll respond.

You have to reach $5, then you can click on your settings in the ibotta app to request a payment. At that time, they’ll ask for your PayPal address.
