VG’s SHOPPING TIPS

Did you know? VG’s offers a $0.05 reusable bag credit per bag you bring. You may have to remind your cashier, however, as the credit is not automatic.

You’ll find printable Spartan coupons at the Turn to Spartan website. You’ll need to register first. Coupons are limited to 1 per family and will NOT double, but they could stretch your savings even further.

Save your receipts – as part of VG’s Community Share Program, they can benefit non-profit groups in Michigan. You don’t need to sign up; simply find a group collecting receipts and turn yours in to them. Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica (45160 Van Dyke at Hall Rd) collects VG’s receipts to purchase socks for the homeless. You can leave your receipts at the front desk there if you can’t find another participating group.

Visit the Meat Department and hunt for the yellow rectangular markdown tags. VG’s routinely offers 50% off soon-to-expire meat; most packages are good cuts of meat with no sign of aging and won’t expire for 2 more days, which allows plenty of time for cooking or freezing.

Shopping with Kids? Stop by the customer service desk and sign them up for the Zoo Crew Kids’ Club. They’ll receive special treats, including a cookie from the bakery when they visit!

$2.29 L.A. Looks Hair Gel
-$1.00/1 coupon
$1.29 after coupon…or .29 after doubled coupon

2 Jessica August 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM

The Goof Off coupons can’t be doubled

3 Jolyn August 24, 2010 at 2:10 PM

Thank you – I’m assuming that also applies to the Mold coupon, too….

4 Tammy August 25, 2010 at 11:54 AM

When did VG’s begin limiting the number of identical coupons to 3?

5 Jolyn August 25, 2010 at 12:12 PM

It’s been in their ad for quite a while – I’d have to look up when it happened, but when some locations began doubling up to $1, they placed the limit of 3 identical coupons on all store locations.

6 Tammy August 25, 2010 at 1:57 PM

Jolyn, no need to look it up. I know at the beginning of the summer there was not a limit and today when I used the self scan and I had more than 3 of the like coupons it came up that limit had been reached, I had not noticed that before. Thank you for the clarification!!

7 Jolyn August 25, 2010 at 4:58 PM

They’ve published it in their store ad since March. I was never sure if it was something the cashier had to catch or whether the computer was programmed that way. Obviously, the computer knows!

8 Stacey August 27, 2010 at 12:20 AM

I’m confused by the wording, though… the ad actually reads “Limit 3 Manufacturer’s Coupons will be doubled per like item purchased.” When I asked a cashier at the Shelby store about using 4 coupons on Danimals products, she indicated that I could use all 4 coupons as long as I bought at least 2 different flavors/types. But I suppose it’s open to interpretation!

9 Tammy August 28, 2010 at 12:22 AM

When I tried to use more than the 3, I had 2 different flavors of cheese and lunch meat, and still only doubled 3. Also wanted to share a good buy I found today. The Kraft sliced cheese in flavors of Jalapeno and Garlic Herb are 50% off because they are being discontinued. I also had 3- $1.00 off coupons from before, so the 3 packages of cheese slices were free.

10 Amie August 29, 2010 at 12:57 AM

Some of the VG’s have discontinued Clorox Wipes in the decorated tub. So if you have you coupon for Clorox Wipes you get them for $0.25. I stocked up!!!!

11 Nora C August 29, 2010 at 6:09 PM

The Thurs, Fri, Sat deals include 12 charmin big rolls, or 6 ct Mega rolls for $4.99. If you have any of the $1/1 coupons from the “Thank You Mom” coupon booklet that we could send in for last spring, or out of any of thier speically marked packages that contain coupons I’m thinking that should be a pretty good deal.

12 Gina August 29, 2010 at 9:02 PM

I didn’t see the Barilla coupon in today’s SS…am I missing something?

13 Jolyn August 29, 2010 at 10:50 PM

I hope you just missed it. In my Det Freep, it was near the center – a full 2 page spread with 3 coupons ($1.00/2 Whole Grain, $1.00/2 Piccolini an $1.25/1 Tortellini).

14 ChristinaN August 30, 2010 at 3:21 AM

I bought 3 detroit free press and only one of them had this coupon it. I was a little disappointed.

15 Gina August 30, 2010 at 3:56 PM

I just went back through my SS’s and all three did not have it :( Totally bummed…how does that happen? They are also from the Det Freep…

16 Stacey August 30, 2010 at 3:49 PM

Funny – both my Det Freep and my little Macomb Advisor SS inserts had $1.00/2 Whole Grain, $1.00/2 Piccolini, and $1.25/2 Barilla Pasta Sauce. Weird that the Qs are different for the same paper!!

17 Win September 1, 2010 at 10:07 AM

Have you ever seen all the coupons for sale on eBay. They have to come from somewhere. My guess is that someone is purloining coupons from the newspapers, either at the distributor or at the reailer. How else could it be???

18 Linda August 30, 2010 at 8:43 PM

Found a Bestlife Buttery spread for $1 off one purchase in the Red Plum 8-29-10 coupons.

19 Stacey August 31, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Today, the Shelby store has lots of Jennie-O turkey products in the manager’s special area (packages expiring today). I found seasoned extra lean turkey patties for $1.62 and turkey italian sausage for $1.25. Most of them had $0.55/1 peelies on them (that will double!), making for REALLY cheap meat! :)

Also – the Kool-Aid Fun Fizz drops are on sale (until 9/12) for $1.99. The $1/1 coupon from 8-29 SS makes them FREE!

20 Eniko September 2, 2010 at 3:38 PM

I went to the Ryan store today, they told me that the wheat thins coupon (from facebook) was fake, and did not accept it. The cashier and the manager were very nice about it, they apparently do not get reimbursed for this coupon. Just wanted to let you know.

21 Jolyn September 2, 2010 at 3:52 PM

The store has the right to deny the use of any coupon they feel might be questionable – so that’s not wrong. The Wheat Thins coupon, however, if printed directly from the website (and not a photocopy) is NOT a FAKE. It’s a verified SmartSource printable coupon and the store would be reimbursed for it. Just wanted you to know I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise.

22 Eniko September 2, 2010 at 5:03 PM

I do trust you Jolyn, and appreciate immensely the hard work you put into this website and sharing all these deals with me/us. I just wanted to give you the information, in case others run into this problem. I did not know if there was anything I could have said to defend the coupon, so she just took the item off my order. She said something about not having a watermark on the coupon… Sorry, if my comment was worded in an offensive way. I will try to be careful next time.

23 Jolyn September 2, 2010 at 8:57 PM

Eniko, I didn’t take offense at all. :) Newer readers may not realize that I do try to be very careful what I recommend. I did also have a comment about that Wheat Thins coupon from another reader on the FB page – she was denied the use of it at the Sterling Hts location b/c it didn’t have 2 bar codes. I’ve never seen them refuse a SmartSource coupon before, but I suppose I haven’t tried that many at VG’s – and none at that location. And they’ll have a tendency to be more cautious with what they accept when they double to $1. I wish I still had my coupon to reference – I don’t recall whether SmartSource coupons HAVE watermarks.

24 Tammy September 3, 2010 at 8:54 AM

Just wondering where you got the prices for the Kraft Deli Deluxe Cheese Slices and Kraft 100 cal pack cheese for 1.99 and get $3.00 off when buy 6? Our VG’s does not have either of them on sale or in their ad, both products are regular price 3.79 and 2.79 and the signs do not include them in the offer. Thank you for the help!!

25 Jolyn September 3, 2010 at 10:23 AM

The ad I use is Macomb-based and includes Shelby Twp and Sterling Heights stores. You may want to look at that ad online to see if/how it differs from yours. Most weeks it’s identical across all locations. Sorry for the confusion!

26 Tammy September 3, 2010 at 8:30 PM

No, I appreciate the clarification, thanks for all you do!!

27 Amie September 4, 2010 at 3:17 PM

Just wanted to let you all know that my VG’s in Burton has the Mr.Clean dry earser on sale for $2.19. After your coupon from last Sunday you only pay .19. I was so happy to find this deal. Hope this helps some of you:)

28 Jolyn September 4, 2010 at 10:29 PM

Did you happen to read the tag and note how long the sale price is valid for? That’s a great find!

29 Amie September 4, 2010 at 10:45 PM

No, but I will be back in the morning and I will look and let you know:)

30 Stacey September 5, 2010 at 4:45 PM

It’s valid until 9/12. Thanks for the find, Amie! :)

31 Stacey September 4, 2010 at 11:55 PM
