The one thing that drives me NUTS about Meijer is how they are always rearranging their produce sections according to what’s on sale. I hate having to look all around for where they moved something every week!

2 K July 23, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Meijer:
Don’t make me wait like a criminal at CS while you confirm if what I am requesting a raincheck for is really out of stock. It is. Honestly.

I have never shopped online at Meijer as I feel their prices aren’t competitive with other vendors.

The double coupons!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 lori July 23, 2010 at 10:14 PM

The double coupons=free alot of time love them

5 Kim July 23, 2010 at 10:25 PM

I would like to share my thoughts – thanks for the opportunity.
Train the cashiers the same way. Some of my cashiers think you can only use 2 identical coupons -total! This is not the case, you can use multiple coupons (up to 6 identical) but they will only double the 1st 2. Have the same coupon policy – chain wide, don’t leave it to the stores digression – this causes far too much confusion for your customers. Drop the only 2 identical coupons will double routine. Those of us that use coupons get around it by doing multiple orders, which is only causing more work for your cashiers. Just order more stock and your shelves won’t be wiped out. I don’t wipe the shelves out, but I understand that some do. Even though it is limited to 2 identical coupons being doubled, the shelves are still empty – order more stock! And finally, just train the cashiers as to how to do rain checks. Some know how, most do not. This holds up the line big time. Then in most instances, I end up in the customer service line, which only frustrates me more, as my frozen products are melting. Would love to have the rain checks on the shelves like Target does – this would solve the problem all around. I would love to see Meijers just quit limiting their sales, with lack of stock, rain check confusion, etc. Isn’t the point of the store to sell items? I would find myself at Meijers more frequently if there wasn’t all of the lack of stock and cashier confusion. Thanks for my opportunity to rant. Love your site!

I really like that Meijer’s prices are cheap and you can use a mfg coupon with a Meijer mealbox coupon. I score some great deals that way. I like the selection offered as well. I like that my Miejer has a mechanical penny pony; my son LOVES riding the horse when we’re done. I like that they have the Catalina machine that offers extra coupons and deals.

I dislike that their is a limit on the number of coupons that I can double. I understand having a limit, but perhaps having a higher limit than 2 (maybe 4?).

I have never shopped online Meijer.

7 Sharon July 23, 2010 at 10:33 PM

I do not like your new grocery bags. My groceries need to get from the store to my car and then from the car into the house. The bags to not seem strong enough to hold groceries. I am not happy with them at all.

If I use the self service lane I have to go to the service counter to get a rain check. That’s a waste of my time. If I wanted to stand in line I would have went to a regular check out to begin with. Rain checks need to be made available at all check outs.

I don’t shop for groceries online because I use coupons.

8 kristen July 24, 2010 at 11:06 AM

I usually get rainchecks from the attendant at the u – scan without any problem.

9 Stacey July 24, 2010 at 9:45 PM

Interesting – at my Meijer, the U-scan cashiers won’t give out rainchecks; they send me to CS. I ask every time!

10 Kathryn July 23, 2010 at 11:22 PM

I love meijer. I do wish they had a corporate coupon policy and teach their cashiers about coupons! They think that you have to picture the item pictured on the coupon, even though the coupon says any. But I have scored some great deals, and plenty of free items from Meijer.

11 Coley July 23, 2010 at 11:28 PM

I really like the Super Saturday sales, but wish they came on some sort of predictable schedule. Also like the MMB coupons, as that is a definite advantage over Kroger. I agree with the earlier comments of better cashier training on proper coupon useage. It would also be nice to if they were somewhat aware of the catalina’s they were currently offering. If we can keep a list of dates and items here on the web, why do they always need me to get the actual sign to prove it to them? Cant there be a list at customer service? Also, I hate trying to get around your employees giant carts of stock to get at the yogurt. I understand that sometimes you need to replenish stock in the middle of the day, but must they bring out so much at one time that it blocks the aisles?

12 Pam July 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM

That’s so funny, I thought I was always just there at the wrong time, but I can never get to the yogurt either!

13 Stacey July 24, 2010 at 12:14 AM

I love the variety of items offered. If a new product comes out, Meijer is usually one of the first to carry it. The MMB coupons are also great, now that we can use more than one in the same transaction. Regular prices are also reasonable — if I happen to really need something that isn’t on sale, I won’t faint when I see the price! ;)

I agree with the produce comment – I can never find what I’m looking for quickly, so I often just skip that area and shop at other stores for produce. And it drives me crazy that many sale items seem to be sold out by Monday afternoon, conveniently not to be re-stocked until Sunday. Rainchecks are rarely worth it to me — they take WAY too long (the Target system is much better), then I’ve had cashiers try to tell me that I can’t use a raincheck and a coupon together. Train the cashiers better in coupon usage overall, and I’d be more inclined to shop there more often. The price terminology is also confusing to the average shopper — there are regular prices, everyday best prices (which are temporary but long-term), price drops (also temporary, for a shorter time), and sale prices (for the week). I tried explaining those terms to a non-coupon-savvy friend and she looked at me like I was nuts.

Kroger & VGs have now instituted coupon policies where they will double 3 coupons for the same identical variety (meaning you can get 3 grape & 3 cherry, etc.). It would be nice if Meijer did the same thing. Though I do realize we’re lucky to have doubles at all, after recently shopping at an out-of-town Meijer that doesn’t double anything! :)

14 Angela July 24, 2010 at 2:00 AM

I have to agree with the other comments and say that the 2 identical double coupon limit is the pits. I hate having to do multiple transactions. I can usually only shop during Saturday afternoon. It is super busy during that time of the week. I feel so bad when I have someone behind me and I am doing 4 separate transactions.

15 Amanda July 24, 2010 at 7:20 AM

The only reason I shop at Meijers is when I get a great deal, which a lot of time is not worth the hassle. I hate that you can only double two identical coupons. I have also purchased outdated food their on more than one occassion (one day three day outdated ribs, which were not even discounted). I have also had the experience of many of their employees being less than helpful and sometimes very rude. Finally, I can’t count the number of times that items that are on sale don’t ring up correctly- you have to constantly be on watch!

16 KATHY July 24, 2010 at 8:59 AM

I would tell them that if they want their cashiers to be “coupon friendly” which they’ve indicated they do, then they can’t punish them by timing them and not take into account that coupons take extra time!

17 Ja July 24, 2010 at 9:02 AM

Meijer is convenient and has a great selection of products. I shop Meijer more than any other store and we have at least seven grocery stores to choose from in a five mile radius. My biggest pet peeve about Meijer is the stock employees in the aisles. If I am shopping at a time when they are in the aisles, I leave frustrated and thinking I should look for another store. They tend to park their large carts in the middle of the aisle. Nine times out of ten they do not offer to hand me an item that they are blocking or offer to step aside so I can get it. They are very territorial. I can sense that they believe they are more important than the customers in the aisle because they are working. I believe they need a little customer service training. They are in a position that is very visible to the customer and they need to remember that without customers they don’t have jobs.

18 Carrie July 24, 2010 at 9:12 AM

What I like:
Meijers are cheap, clean, friendly stores. Most of my cashier interactions and customer service interactions are positive. Love the coupon doubling and the MBCs.

My two biggest gripes:
1) Mealbox coupons do not scan without being approved by a cashier. This is RIDICULOUSLY laborious in the self checkout lanes. These are YOUR coupons, Meijer! Why can’t they scan cleanly? Also – it seems that frequently they do not deduct $ and the cashier has to manually intervene in that. I love the MBCs but they need to work better.
2) Customer Service needs a list of catalinas. Many catalinas are not in the ad and often not even on a shelf tag. If we can get a list online, why can’t they have a list? This puts the employees and shoppers in a very difficult position when a cat doesn’t print properly. While we’re at it, can’t cashiers address cat issues so I don’t have to stand in the customer service line about half the time I shop at Meijer?

I don’t shop at meijer.com.

19 Brenda July 24, 2010 at 9:30 AM

I shop at Meijer because I can get the best prices overall there.

My favorite things about Meijer:
-the option to stack Meijer Mealbox coupons with manufacturer coupons to make really great savings
-the penny pony
-great produce (& when it’s on sale the prices are good)
-excellent product selections
-it’s a clean, well-organized, pleasant store to shop in

The things I wish I could change:
-things don’t ring up correctly (mostly issues with coupons). I have to watch the register like a hawk & then go over my receipt when I’m done & still VERY OFTEN have to truck over to customer service (wait in line a second time, which is no picnic with 2 small kids) to have it corrected. THEN, they act as if I’m trying to steal money from them & they go back to the checkout lane to pull my coupons to confirm that I really did have the coupon(s) I’m telling them about & that they reallly did not come off my bill as they should have. Soooo frustrating. If the deals there weren’t so great I would have switched stores long ago. I’ve tried & tried to have this issue corrected by talking with management & it continues to happen.
-Iimit of 2 identical coupons doubled per transaction. Other stores (in my area–Columbus, Ohio) don’t have these limits & it’s frustrating that Meijer does.

I don’t shop online, so I can’t comment on the online shopping. Thanks for the chance to speak my piece :o )

20 Kim July 24, 2010 at 9:43 AM

Love Meijer but my store does not double at all (Michigan City, IN)! I wish the coupon policy was corp wide, of course including a good doubling policy – two other chains in my area do double.
Staff is always nice, most cashiers understand coupon users. However, my mid management don’t understand coupon users, they act as if we are taking something without paying and have refused to do two trans with me recently. Like the penny pony! Love the 10 for 10 plus 1 free sales (and the frequency of them)! I buy produce somewhere else typically also because it is overwhelming there. Love that they offer mealbox coupons, wish their expiration dates coupon be longer.

21 Anne July 24, 2010 at 9:52 AM

I love Meijer. At the Meijer I go to I’ve never had a problem with things not ringing up correctly and I’ve never had a problem with an of my coupons. The cashiers at the self check out have been great (I always go to the self check out). I also love the penny pony (or my daughter does)!

22 KELLY July 24, 2010 at 9:55 AM

I feel lucky the majority of the cashiers at the Meijers I shop at are very friendly and helpful. I have even referred some of them to your website when they are amazed at the savings I get from the coupons! I agree with most that the limit on doubling coupons should be maybe 4 instead of 2 to avoid taking up extra time ringing up seperate orders. The rain checks are a pain too – I love the idea someone had about having the rainchecks in the isle where the item is like Target does. The bags they have right now are horrible – anything heavy ususally ends up ripping the bag before I can get it home. If there could be a master list of the catalinas that should be printing for the customers and cashiers to refer to, that would really help when something doesn’t print off like we are expecting it too. It is hard to tell the cashier what catalina should have printed off when there is nothing in writing about it. Saying “Well Jolyn said so” does not usually work!

23 kristen July 24, 2010 at 11:13 AM

YES!!! (about the catalina master list). I have emailed Meijer twice about this already. I was just talking to a worker at the service desk yesterday. This would be my one big complaint. My one small complaint is that the MMB don’t go through at the u-scan without help from the attendant.

Besides these I LOVE Meijer.

PS. I almost forgot about one other REALLY BIG change I would love to see – double coupons in Grand Rapids area!!!

24 Sharon Miller July 24, 2010 at 10:21 AM

Wish all Meijer would double up to $.99. The Meijer in Findlay, OH and Marion, OH only double to $.50. The doubling should be consistant in all Meijer Stores. I have to travel 60 miles to get to a Meijer that doubles up to $.99. What a pain. Otherwise I love Meijer.

25 Emily Arredondo July 24, 2010 at 11:39 PM

Sharon, where do you go that doubles to 99 cents? I live in Carey, and usually shop in Findlay. Just wondering.

Also, I do love that you can use the MBC with a MC. Meijers does have some really good sales. I do usually go to the self checkout, and those cashiers are very nice. One time, one even “over-rode” the 2-coupon-doubling policy, and doubled about 6 of the same q. (doesn’t happen all the time, though)
Once in a while, though, you do run into a cashier that seems to feel that your coupon savings are coming directly out of his/her paycheck. boo. but that can happen anywhere. Most of the time, I have them (and customers nearby) asking where I get all these coupons, and how do I do it. So I tell them :)

26 Sharon Miller July 28, 2010 at 7:14 AM

Emily,
I live in Upper Sandusky. I go to Columbus twice a week and that’s where they double up to $.99. It’s great. I’m sure they also do the same in the Toledo area. I think it should be the same everywhere. Kroger in Marion double up to $.99 also.

27 Rachel July 24, 2010 at 10:21 AM

I agree with many of the positive comments listed above about MMB, the penny horse. I also love the 10 for 10, 11th free sales. – My main concern lately has been the inconsistency of coupon policies. My most recent experience was that a checker was undoubling the coupons that said DND. She was doing it very fast and I almost didn’t notice. I said that this was not my typical experience. She said other people must be new and not know because it is printed on the coupon. I ended up going to CS to return a couple of things that were no longer the deals that I expected. I asked about the store’s policy on DND. She said there is no official policy and that it is completely up to the checker’s discretion. ? Huh ? I think it is frustrating to not know what to expect, yet I don’t want Meijer to officially reject the doubling of all DND like my Kroger and VG’s now does.

28 elizabeth July 24, 2010 at 10:35 AM

My biggest complaint is that the Grand Rapids area stores do not and have never offered double coupons. It doesn’t seem fair that Meijer customers can get an entirely different price just based on where they live (seems discriminatory!). They should either offer double coupons to everyone or no one.

29 April July 24, 2010 at 11:01 AM

Put a coupon policy in writing, with specific instructions on what is appropriate. Such as Meijer BOGO sale can a BOGO coupon or 2 man coupons be used. Or purchase 2 products, can you use a $ man Q and a BOGO Q. Is it one man per item or not! Then train EVERYONE on this policy! Including management!

Their raincheck system is horrible! It takes me just as long to get a raincheck as it does to gather all of my groceries or checkout! Cashiers will substitute items without calling but have to call for a raincheck! They call department to verify they are out, call service desk to write the raincheck and bring it over. If they are going to make it such a pain, why don’t they just make sure they stock the shelves better!

I don’t know about the other Meijer’s but the layout of the store and how the carts are brought in & out of the store are horrible! Almost every time I am there, cart boys are in the middle of the entrance bringing carts in. They block the entrance into the store, then congest the entrance inside the store as they try to take the long line of carts and turn them to put them in the cart area. Maybe it would be better if they had like a limit of 10-15 carts to be brought in at a time, but I have seen 50 carts in one line at one time and the cart boys can’t stear that many carts!

Also post your weekly ad before midnight on Sunday! So I can prepare for my Sunday morning shopping trip ahead of time. (I really need to shop first thing on Sunday morning, if not they run out of stock by mid day and you don’t know when they will restock. It really messes up your deals, especially on a 10/10 sale!)

Thank you for doing this Jolyn, I hope you enjoy your time with your family!

30 shannon July 24, 2010 at 11:14 AM

I love Meijer I drive an hour just to go shopping there. I can get in and out and people are so friendly. The only issue I have had is not getting catalinas. One in particular was buying $20 worth of General Mills and Betty Crockerthe cashier had to get someone to check it out on the floor and finally got me checkedout need to keep this information at all checkouts so that it does not hold lines up. Thankfully the person behind was not in a hurry I don’t know about the people behind him though. Otherwise love Meijer come to Danville, Kentucky already. I hope Meijer gets this. Thanks.

31 Christina July 24, 2010 at 11:16 AM

You guys need to do something to ensure that your Meijer Meal Box coupons actually work. I have used them correctly several times and have had only about a 50% sucess rate of the discount actually coming off. Also, I have had bad experiences with cashiers being very rude just because I have coupons, sometimes I only have a few and still get an attitude.

32 Carol July 24, 2010 at 11:25 AM

Good things:
–Best produce around (although sometimes out of stock)
–Good selections of brands
–Love the monthly 5%/15% discount for using Meijer credit card as well as the monthly Senior Monday
–Lines generally not horrendous
–The blue recycle grocery bags
–Meijer credit card

Not-so-good things:
–Very little packaging for singles (“family packs” on sale often, but my freezer room is limited)
–Out of stock more than other stores
–Products I like keep being discountinued or are offered in “family size” instead
–New format of moving pharmacy to the opposite end of the store from groceries–not very senior and/or handicap friendly

33 Melissa July 24, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I like Meijer’s prices, especially its sale prices. I also like that I can buy almost anything that I need in one stop, from computer paper to weed n feed, to dishes, to groceries. That is a convenience that I appreciate. What I dislike about my particular Meijer (Taylor location) is the cafe. Many newer or updated locations have a nice coffee station or a nice selection of fresh choices. The Taylor location has a very unkempt, poorly stocked cafe where, at best, I might get a fresh cup of regular coffee. Also, I dislike that when I am looking for an item that appears out of stock, I can almost never find an employee that can tell me if the item is at an end cap or in the back, or if it’s simply out of stock. I like another commenter’s idea about having the rain checks right there by the item, as it is a hassle, as well as sometimes downright hard to remember, to get a rain check at checkout.

As for the website, I use it for the Meijer Mealbox coupons and that’ s about it. I’ve perused the merchandise on the site before, but never purchased anything as it usually seems pricey.

Thank you!

34 Becky July 24, 2010 at 11:48 AM

Hi. I love Meijer sales when you can combine MMB and manufacturer’s coupons! Please tell them to keep up the MMB program! I agree that we should ask for more doubling of like coupons. Even if they go up to 3, it would be better. It’s very difficult to do separate orders with 2 small children.
Keeping a current catalina list at even the customer service line would be better than what they have now. It’s so hard to get a catalina when the machine just isnt’ working and you know did everything right. Many times, I’ve been given a very angry and annoyed look, along with a story that if there is no sign posted (which there rarely is at my store), you are out of luck. Wow. I do get treated like I’m trying to steal something sometimes.
It would be nice to get through a self checkout line without having to call the cashier over to take care of a MMB coupon! It’s hard on busy days to get help, and people get annoyed that you have so many to work with. Maybe set the program to notify the attendant after 4? At least we could do most of our own coupons then, and might get through without waiting so long for help.
But seriously, Meijer is a great place to shop and I will put up with a little inconvenience to get the great sales I’ve been getting in the last several months. Thanks Meijer for great deals!! Keep up the good work.

35 gg July 24, 2010 at 11:54 AM

I love my meijer, I have only had one cranky cashier. The cashiers are always great, and do not question my coupons like some of the other stores. I do try to not make giant purchases. I save a lot more going twice and being careful. It is hard to coupon if you do not allow the time. I know I screw up if i am in a rush. I hate that the mealbox coupons do not scan. I try to sort my coupons by what will trigger the help and scan those last. I have gone to the new Rochester Hills meijer at lunch, it is near my office. It is never busy, and seems to have good stock of items that my local meijer can be out of. Employees seems to be extra nice there. And I LOVE the doubles. Change # to 4, that would be fair. More than that I think we would have issues with stock. Never had a issue with rainchecks, have been able to get them easily at uscan. I stand and watch the cashier scan at UScan. The mealbox do not always deduct. Have to watch that. Some cashiers are good at making sure they do, but some are not. Watch the total at the bottom to make sure they deduct as they scan. Meijer is my favorite for coupons. Never used the online site for shopping.

36 Karen July 25, 2010 at 9:57 PM

I absolutely love the new Rochester Hills store, too. Everyone is friendly and helpful, and I’ve never had even one Q issue. Also like the bottle return area being seperate and up-front.

37 mindy July 24, 2010 at 12:19 PM

I would like to tell Meijer to double coupons in all stores. I don’t see how they can pick and choose when they are all owned by the same people. It should be this way with sales also. I know that sometimes the Detroit sales are cheaper than ours here in kalamazoo. Why? Don’t give me the demograffics answer either. We all want to save money the same way. I agree with the other comments that cashiers should all be trained the same way. I don’t like being told my coupons are fraudulent or no good when I know they are. Oh, and could you give us more bathrooms please! Ours has 2 stalls. 2! I do however like the do-it-yourself checkouts. I can take my time. I don’t like to be rushed. Some of your cashiers will put up that blocker and let the next person go. I am still trying to bag my groceries here. Give me a break. There are no limits on those lines so I am going to take my time and get it all right. Can we possible get a hand scanner on those lines so our coupons will scan better. And why does every Meijer coupon beep. Really? They are your coupons after all. I could go on but I am getting agitated.

38 Courtney July 24, 2010 at 1:56 PM

Meijer is my favorite store. With their sales and double coupons, you can’t really get better deals anywhere else. I always seem to have great cashiers, who don’t mind ALL my coupons. Even customer service has been wonderful. They always take my word and don’t have a problem accepting a coupon that I forgot to use when I checked out.

There are two Meijer stores that I shop at, and one is very good about stocking and the other is often sold out on items on the very first day of the sale. So, I’m sure it has a lot to do with management/organization.

I find the produce to be better at Meijer than other grocery stores. I also like a lot of the Meijer brand products, along with the 10 for 10 deal.

U-scan can be a bit time consuming, but I like the fact that I can make sure each of my coupons comes off my bill. It would be wonderful if they changed their policy of only doubling two identical coupons. Like you all said, having a million separate transactions can be a pain.

Since Meijer match-ups seem to be the heart of Bargains to Bounty, I know we appreciate what a terrific store it is!

39 Sheri July 24, 2010 at 3:03 PM

I love the deals at Meijer. I hate that they don’t double more than 2 Q’s. While it is always a struggle to do more than one transaction, I can’t get the deals I get at Meijer anywhere else. Meijers is where I do most of my grocery shopping.

I would absolutely love it if they would do unlimited Q’s like Krogers. I would probably do all my shopping at Meijer if that was the case.

40 Nancy July 24, 2010 at 4:51 PM

I love our Meijers (White Lake). My favorite cashier is Virginia who always always always goes the “extra mile”. I would love for them to institute electronic coupon loading, 4 duplicate coupons, .5 rebate for bringing your own bag, and sufficiently trained self serve assistants. I also love the idea of a catalina list!! Their produce is far superior to the Krogers by our home, the majority of staff is courteous and friendly and the store is clean. I never have a problem with them stocking shelves mid day…
What makes me happiest however (besides Virginia) is that even on the self check-out lanes they pack my bags for me!!!
Hope all these great comments and ideas actually get to Meijers!

41 Marnie July 24, 2010 at 5:13 PM

My main gripes are the Meijer Mealbox coupons not scanning, and the small aisles. I don’t shop at Meijer unless there is a REALLY good deal on something, because I have two stores that double to a dollar near me. I can almost always get a better deal at one of them. If Meijer would do a double dollar day now and then, instead of those Meijer Mealbox coupons, I would probably shop there more often.

42 jennifer July 24, 2010 at 6:07 PM

Meijer is the number one place that I shop because:

1. Prices – sales, coupons double, MMB coupons, catalinas
2. Selection of Products – I always look for new items at Meijer. I love that they have extensive general merchandise on top of groceries – one stop shopping.
3. Quality of Produce
4. Helpful Employees – they totally go out of their way to help me and I appreciate it.
5. Services such as postage, lottery, Red Box rentals.

I would love to see the produce placed in a consistent place so that I don’t waste time wandering around trying to find what I’m looking for.

I wish that the MMB coupons would scan correctly and would not require the help of a cashier when using self check-out.

I wish that the dairy section wasn’t all the way in the back of the store. Seems to me that items that require refridgeration and freezing should be in the front of the store – seems like a much more healthy thing to do especially on days like today when the heat index is over 110 degrees.

I frequently become frustrated with individuals stocking the store while the store is busy. Really, this is so inconvenient and there has to be a more customer friendly way to restock.

I wish the deli carried more upscale deli items like my local Marsh has. If I want great deli prepared salads, deserts, meats, etc. I go to Marsh not Meijer.

I wish the bakery had more upscaled breads – again closer to what can be found at Marsh.

Thanks for listening!

43 Jennifer July 24, 2010 at 7:53 PM

I hate the fact that I buy so much stuuf from meijer that throwing out a reciept is throwing away money. I bought an outdoor rug and questioned its durability so I kept the reciept, low and behold it lasted 3 days and it was bald’r than a babies butt. My husband threw out the reciept thinking I didn’t need it. Other situations arise too like if I cant find a reciept its because I have 65 more at home identical cluttering up my house. BTW I really like meijer but the limit on doubling identical coupons ticks me off too, but not as much as the shelves being bare when I arrive to do my shopping. I don’t care if it’s Friday, provide me a raincheck.

44 Melanie July 24, 2010 at 8:17 PM

My biggesgt complaint with Meijers is that more times than not there is a mistake where I am overcharged either through prices on signs not ringing up or coupons not being deducted correctly. The worst example was when $22 worth of coupons did NOT come off of the total. Usually it is a $1 or $2, but that still is annoying. I don’t understand why it is so difficult to get it right. I am a faithful Meijer shopper though.

I HATE THIS STORE!!!

My store has changed over to almost all self-serve aisles. The machines rarely take my coupons, so it’s always a long nightmare to try a coupon, hail a customer rep to get in the system to take the coupon, and repeat.

The cashiers ALWAYS give me grief over my coupons (and I DO NOT cheat!). It’s almost like the money comes out of their pockets!

Many times the prices ring up wrong, and it doesn’t take all my coupons. another time-consuming trip to the CS area.

I don’t like the Meijer brand products, and more and more that the shelves reflect fewer brand names and more Meijer’s.

With all the hassles, there is never a thing like “..a quick trip to Meijer’s”.

It is to the point I go there only to cherry-pick the really good deals, and spend the bulk of my shopping dollars elsewhere.

My mid-michigan Meijer used to be my favorite, But I have been converted to a KROGER shopper now with the Double $1 coupons. I get much stuff for free.
Meijer PROS:
Very Clean
MMB coupons with no print limit
10 for 10 sales
trial stands with coupons usually
helpful stock persons and service desk
Good about rain checks

CONS :
NO CORPORATE COUPON POLICY!!!!!!! (too many gray areas)
Always out of sale produce after noon
Lack of selection of organic and nutritional products
Never newest products (coupons expire before they reach the shelf)
Only double 2 coupons up to $.50
Very picky about what coupons the will except (no more SS printables)
Cashiers need more knowledge about coupons

I always have an issue with my order. Either a missed coupon or a catalina not printing. Usually leave frustrated. And I like to keep couponing FUN!!!

We do most of our shopping at Meijer. We are very pleased with both Rochester Hills locations. The new one seems very empty quite often, so hopefully it’s profitable as I like the layout and the overall atmosphere of the store, but it worries me to see it so empty.

Until we moved in 2007, we used to shop at the Sterling Heights (16 & Van Dyke) location, which was an absolute disgrace of a store. I really hope they’ve improved it since then. They were always out of sale items, their U-Scans were frequently out of order (they blamed the fact that they were located too close to the door and would be affected by the heat or cold, whichever was in play at the time), and the store never had enough registers open, resulting in very long lines. There were always lines at the bottle return station, and the machines would typically refuse at least 25% of my returns for no apparent reason. I couldn’t stand that store and it was only when I started shopping at the 15 & Utica store, and later moved to RH that I realized that the Van Dyke store was just a bad location. Still, it nearly turned me off to the entire chain!

The Rochester Hills stores seems to have friendly cashiers, though you really have to watch them with regards to coupons, as sometimes they will just skip past them if it doesn’t automatically register and you’re not paying attention. I also had one cashier refuse to take a coupon printed at Coupons.com, claiming it was fraudulent and being very accusatory towards my wife and I. When I complained, the manager graciously sent me a small gift card, which really made me happy. In most cases, the cashiers are friendly, though I have to agree that coupon and rain check policies seem to change like the wind.

I find that whenever Meijer has their brand of facial tissue on sale, you can pretty much forget about ever being able to pick it up, especially if it’s in the 10 for 10 sales. They never seem to stock enough and they must get rain checks galore, because even for the week or two following the sale, I can rarely find it.

I would recommend that Meijer spend more time concentrating on stocking sale items. While the RH stores are OK, there are still too many times where the shelves are empty for sale items. Often, if you can find someone, they’ll go and get you some from the back, but this could be greatly reduced if they had stockpeople dedicated specifically to sale items, which of course are going to move quickly. I don’t share the complaints of others who get bothered by them stocking during peak times. I’d rather have to maneuver around someone stocking shelves than have them empty.

I also think that there should be some flexibility at the deli counter. Usually they have two people working, but during peak times they should have the capability of bringing in a third person when there is a long queue. I think I’ve seen this happen exactly one time.

All in all, though, we are very satisfied Meijer customers.

Lots of great comments here!

One suggestion – how about having 2 or 3 checkout lanes DEDICATED TO COUPON SHOPPERS? These cashiers would be super-trained in the Meijer coupon policy, polite to couponers, know their catalina deals, no one behind in line would get angry when you have a stack of coupons, and everyone would have a better experience:)

For those of you that are complaining about them being out of particular products, it is their new corporate policy, they do not order products they get what they get. Write to Meijer Corporate office and let them know. Today wanted to get the 10 for $10 with the 11th free of Pennsylvania Dutch Mushrooms and they had zero on the shelf. I was told, maybe we will get some by Thursday.

I love Meijer. I like that I can go there and get everything I need at one store. I do NOT like that here in West Michigan they don’t double coupons. I would tell them to change this! I think it’s because they don’t really have any competition here so they don’t feel the need to.

I love Meijer and their selection, and the double coupons, but I wish they could increase the amount that doubles. Also, I REALLY, REALLY dislike how they have rearranged the store so that the health and beauty is on the opposite side of the store from the grocery. Very inconvenient for a mom with two kids in tow.

I love Meijer, I honestly do. I’ve found where we live in Walled Lake they have the best prices against Kmart or Walmart. However I will only go to the Wixom Meijer, I will not go to Commerce Under any circumstances. I wish they would do a major over haul on that store and actually teach the managers and cashiers, not to mention service desk. I wish they would learn that I am not trying to pull a fast one when I returned Formula with a reciept unopened because my daughters doctor put her on soy formula. I also wish that one store would realize I’m not a complete moron. Last fall I ended up getting a cashier and a manager let go because I had a manager scream at me I mean scream at me claiming they did not double coupons. They never had, and never would. This is after I showed her and the cashier who was un doubling everything in the ad where is states doubles coupons up to .50. I just really wish that they would completely revamp that Meijers training. The other thing is I feel like there is never enough stock.

I like:
The good deals at Meijer, usually using a manf. coupon with a Mealbox coupon.
That I can shop anytime of the day that I need to.
I dislike:
They are usually out of at least three things on my list that are on sale. (And WHY can’t those greeters give out rainchecks?? They are standing right there next to the ads!)
The self checkout NEVER scans my coupons properly, or I would love to use it.
The carts for children have movies that cost money and are out of order half the time. Kroger and Target have great carts for two small children.
I have not tried Meijer.com.

Like: prices, double coupons, selection, allergry free products
Dislike: there being over 20 lanes and only 3 are open with long lines, no baggers, the register not ringing the sale price, being out of sale items

I wish all the stores would use the same coupon policy. I live in Michigan (the three rivers area). They do not double the coupons and are not very coupon friendly. So I shop Meijers in Goshen, Indiana, Which doubles coupons, and they are so nice about taking coupons. I would like to support my local stores, but they make it hard when they do not support me.

I agree with the comments about moving items frequently and leaving stocking carts in front of whole sections of product. Don’t they realize we have to be able to get to the product to spend our money on it? I also think dedicated coupon lines are a great idea!

I shop at the Oxford store and although I am usually satisfied with my visit, I do wish they would make sure all stock is reachable. I am short and often have to resort to standing on the bottom shelf to get something from the top shelf. Sometimes I still have to use another box to knock down what I’m after! I also would like there to be more than one cashier-staffed lane open late at night. By the time I’m done shopping and it’s after 11 I don’t want to check myself out, and I also don’t want to wait in much of a line or hold up the people behind me because the (sweet!) lady checking me out is having trouble with my coupons. And that hour, when the customer service desk is closed, is always when my catalina coupons don’t print like they should. The yare always great about doing a voucher the next day, but I don’t like having to go back for it.

Oh where do I begin?

I do love their sales and the ability to use a Mealbox and a manufacturer coupon on each item.

Here’s where I believe Meijer can make improvements:
-Educate your employees. When I use a coupon – I am not robbing your store. You get reimbursed for the coupons I redeem at face value, plus a handling fee.

-STOCK YOUR SHELVES! If something is on sale starting on Sunday – I should NOT have to get a raincheck by Monday morning! Order more stuff! I have also noticed multiple times that the shelves are bare – but there is stock in the back. I’ve witnessed an employee bring up a case for me – give me 4 cans out of the case and then take the case back to store room instead of placing it on the shelf!

- Double more than 2 like coupons. As mentioned above – I am stubborn enough to do more than 1 transaction to get the full doubling value of all my coupons – not just the first two.

- Change the redemption of the Mealbox coupons. I often use Uscan so I don’t hold up the line in a regular lane. EVERY SINGLE Mealbox coupon “beeps” and reqired cashier invention. This is a waste of everyone’s time. Often times the coupon will not deduct from the bottom line total either. This is frustrating, as I have to watch the register like a hawk and then get the cashier’s attention to fix it. Or wait in line at customer service to do so.

-Have a CORPORATE coupon policy. It is hard to know what rules to follow when they change depending on the store director, the manager on duty, and the cashier who is checking me out. If there was a corporate policy I would be able to point out why it is legit to use the coupons I am trying to use. This policy would also be helpful to your employees so they can point to it if I am using a coupon incorrectly.
