I found this great article by Brett Arends recommended for reading by a new blogging friend, Lesa – and I’m so glad that she pointed it out. Read the full article here:

Doing the Math on Coupons
by Brett Arends

From the article:

Average saving per coupon: Just $1.44, according to the Inmar report.

How long does it actually take to clip and use a coupon? Certainly the more you use, the less overall time you will spend per coupon, because so many of the costs — getting flyers, sorting coupons and so on — are generalized. Let’s assume you spend a minute per coupon.

Saving $1.44 for a minute’s effort is the equivalent of saving $14.40 for 10 minutes’.

Hourly rate: $86.40.

Many people argue that coupons aren’t worth their time. What do you think? Is the time you spend preparing coupons and shopping lists a good investment?

How interesting!

I knew I was saving lots of money, but when I see it put like that it really encourages me to continue. Thanks Jolyn!

I LOVE IT!!! I just emailed my husband this. He always makes fun of me, but brags to his buddies about the savings.

The time I spend preparing coupons and shopping lists is not just worth my time but it’s an investment in sanity! I enjoy organizing and making lists…but as a SAHM I don’t have to many projects that aren’t child related and subject to demolition (you can organize a toddlers room, book, etc. all you want but it won’t stay that way for long!)
So, I really enjoy taking Sunday nap time to organize my coupons and lists for the week. It’s something that I can see tangible results from.

Totally worth it! I do my clipping/organizing either while watching TV, or at Boy Scouts on Monday nights while they are in their meeting. (long drive-so I wait at the church) Makes the time go faster, and boy is it ever a conversation starter!

Clipping is definately worth my time and sanity. It’s become more than saving money to me… It’s an outlet.

Plus I like how my MIL brags to everyone she knows that I’m the “coupon queen” rotfl. Too cute.

Too funny! I was just telling my hubby the other day that I should time myself and see how much time I spend on coupons to find my hourly rate!
